What is the DBA?

You are probably wondering what the DBA, or Dallas Bar Association, is. It is one of the largest and most active organizations or associations of lawyers in Texas, founded by 40 attorneys in 1873. Its principles include:

  • Promoting professional excellence among lawyers.
  • Fostering community service, including legal clinics and access-to-justice programs.
  • Supporting continuing legal education and professional development in this field.
  • Driving leadership and civic participation within the legal system of Dallas, Texas.
  • Connecting the more than 13,000 attorneys who make up its membership.

What is the Election Process for DBA Board Members?

The process for electing Board Members in professional organizations usually follows a similar model, but it is important to mention that each association may have its own internal rules. In the case of the DBA, they implement an internal mechanism, which is designed to guarantee leadership, transparency, and representation among its more than 13,000 member attorneys.

It is essential to mention that small adjustments may arise each year, but in general, the model works like this:

  1. Candidate Nominations

At the DBA, there is a nominating committee that identifies and proposes candidates. Candidates can also be presented through petitions signed by members of the Dallas Bar Association. One vital thing to know is that all nominees must be members in good standing.

  1. Eligibility Verification

This step helps to confirm that each candidate meets the specific requirements of the association, which commonly include a good professional and ethical record. Previous participation in committees or industry activities is also often highlighted.

  1. Publication of the Candidate List

The DBA officially announces the candidates for the various Board of Directors positions. Each candidate presents a brief biography and their service history.

  1. Voting

When it is time to choose the selected candidates, all active members of the association can vote. In the case of the DBA, voting is carried out by the more than 13,000 member attorneys and is usually done electronically to ensure broad participation. Each member is entitled to one vote for each available position.

  1. Vote Counting and Certification

The organization verifies the results transparently and certifies the winners. Subsequently, the DBA publicly announces the new members.

  1. Beginning of the Mandate

The new members of the Board of Directors begin their term on the date established by the organization. Their new responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of programs
  • Support for committees
  • Representation of the membership
  • Driving service and justice initiatives
  • Support for the administrative operation of the association
